Returning residents run across still-hot lava fields in the center of Goma. The lava was still hot enough to melt shoe soles. Residents decided that they would rather return to their former houses than risk a refugee center in Rwanda.

Jackson Tambwe Zungizungi reacts to the loss of his family's cars upon his return to his family's home in Goma, Congo. He had fled five days ago and just returned to find everything destroyed. He has only seen five of his eight family members so far.

Children in Goma, Congo, walk past the Cathedral of St. Joseph holding items they have scavenged near by. The largest church in Goma was completely destroyed by the volcanic eruption. The decorative painting seems to have foreshadowed the church's demise.

In a bid to reclaim their city from the lava flow, Goma, Congo volunteers smash volcanic rocks to build a path across the lava that had split the city in half and ease the crossing for thousands of displaced residents. The sledge hammers were supplied by the international aid organization German Agro Action.
